The naked truth about Shea Butter:
Hello Best Skin Squad:
Let's chat about Shea Butter! As we journey together to live in "our best skin", I wanted to share how much I loooove Shea Butter! It has been a game changer for my beautiful beauty flawed, maturing yet youthful, ever changing, impacted by auto immune issues skin which by the way, on a good day, I embrace the uniqueness of vitiligo and on my struggle days, I just don't. But I still lovingly massage my Shea Butter on and say, "Thank You, Lord" for the skin I'm in, it is my "best skin", sweet sigh. I've been crafting my own Shea Butter formula and using it for four decades. I will be forever grateful to my Grandma Mary, Aunt Claire and Uncle Ormond for introducing me to the world of Shea Butter and sharing their wisdom, knowledge and recipes. There would be no Oils in Harmony Products without them.
Knowledge is Power! Making an investment of understanding your skin and what it needs to be "Your Best Skin" is priceless. Let's dig into what the natural phenomenon, Shea Butter is all about:
Shea butter is a natural product and has gained popularity in the skincare industry. It is often used to address issues like dry skin, eczema, and dermatitis. Even if you have minimal skin issues, Shea Butter is said “to be a great body moisturizer”. In Africa, it has been used for centuries, primarily in West Africa, for its various skincare and culinary benefits. And no, you can not eat Oils in Harmony Shea Butter. It is a natural product to be applied to the skin and hair only. I'm just saying....
Someone recently asked if it was an edible butter. (insert slight snicker)
So what is Shea Butter?
It’s a natural product:
Shea butter is derived from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa or Butyrospermum parkii), which is native to Africa.
The nuts are extracted, crushed, roasted, and then boiled to extract the fat, which solidifies into shea butter upon cooling.
Because it is a natural product, it will not clog your skin. ( Yes that is a myth)!
It is naturally designed to nourish your skin.
The benefits of the goodness inside Shea Butter:
Shea butter is rich in a variety of fatty acids. Fatty acids are excellent natural moisturizers, they help to form a protective barrier on the skin's surface, preventing water loss and keeping the skin hydrated. I say this in love: So stop being ashy. Even if you can't see the ash, ummmm, it's still there. Put some Shea Butter on that ash! It’s a natural way to seal in moisture as it penetrates deeply. Also, Fatty acids play a role in supporting collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. Who doesn’t want firmer skin, right?
Let's be clear, it will not snatch you up like a round of botox but the natural ingredients in Shea Butter are waiting for you to experience all the benefits.
Shea Butter is said to have natural anti inflammatory properties, which can offer help to soothe and calm irritated skin, making the properties beneficial for individuals with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Shea Butter is said to contain Vitamins A, D, E and K. Which play crucial roles in supporting skin health such as anti aging, aids in the production of new skin cells, contributing to a smoother complexion, contributes to the treatment of mild acne and mild scarring. While these vitamins offer various benefits, it's essential to note you gotta eat right and drink more water, proper skincare, and, in some cases, supplementation can contribute to optimal skin health. (I'll let you decide what that looks like, no judgement at all) Consulting with a healthcare professional or dermatologist can provide personalized advice based on individual needs and skin conditions.
There are a ton of benefits, but I'm trying to keep it short for the sake of this blog. Lol.. Feel free to do your own personal study. Enjoy your discoveries and come back to place your order. (Yup, shameless plug).
Skincare Uses:
Oils in Harmony Whipped Shea Butter does not contain water, alcohol or fillers; Therefore a little goes a long way! It is literally straight Premium Shea Butters, Premium carrier oils and Premium essential and fragrance oils. There's also an oil absorbing powder to lessen the greasy feel. With our Shea Butter you will experience a smooth velvety feel, and you'll smell wonderful!
It should not be used like lotion which you apply generously. Depending on what cha working with, small frame or a person of size, a pea to dime size or less amount of our Shea Butter can cover your upper or lower extremities. Give the Shea Butter a few seconds to penetrate the skin, leaving a soft, radiant glow without a greasy feel. If you experience a greasy feel, it is because you have applied too much. Lately, I have not followed my own instruction with the my newest creation, Hot CoCo! I am obsessed! I slaaaather waaay to much on because I love this scent! The Cocoa and warm spices are comforting on multiple levels. (Will chat more on that later).
Our Shea Butter can be applied to dry skin but the maximum benefit is right after a shower or bath. Did you know it is wiser to pat dry your skin with a towel instead of rubbing dry. When you rub dry, you're removing essential moisture. Apply our Shea Butter after gently patting the skin dry to seal in a higher leel of hydration.
Haircare Uses:
Many people use shea butter for hair care, as it can help moisturize the hair and scalp.
It is often found in hair conditioners, masks, and styling products.
Applying a small amount of Oils in Harmony Shea Butter distributed through out your damp hair will offer moisture for all hair types. Yes, even my European customers who want to tame their frizz or have more control with their curly hair use it, just use less than us melanated folks. Oh and the added benefit of our Shea Butters is the lingering scent wafting throughout your hair! My personal opinion, scented hair is simply sexy.
Ethical and Sustainable Production:
Shea butter production is a significant economic activity in many African countries.
Ethical and sustainable practices in shea butter production are encouraged to support local communities and preserve the environment.
Potential Allergies:
While shea butter is generally well-tolerated, individuals with nut allergies should exercise caution.
Some people may have sensitivities or allergies to components in shea butter, although this is relatively uncommon.
It's important to note that individual experiences with shea butter can vary, and it may not be suitable for everyone. As with any skincare or health product, it's advisable to perform a patch test and, if needed, consult with a healthcare professional, especially for individuals with existing skin conditions or allergies.
